How to Stay Motivated When Life Gets Hard
There are moments in life when motivation seems to disappear overnight.
Maybe you’ve experienced a setback, or work feels overwhelming? Perhaps relationships have become challenging, or you’ve simply lost the excitement you once had for your goals.
The truth is, motivation isn’t constant. Even the most successful people experience periods where they question themselves or struggle to move forward.
As a Life Coach NZ, one of the biggest misconceptions I hear is: “I just need more motivation.”
In reality, motivation isn’t the starting point. Action is.
Once you understand this shift, everything changes.
Motivation Follows Movement
Most people wait until they feel motivated before taking action. Unfortunately, that day often never comes.
Instead, motivation grows after we take the first small step.
Think of motivation like pushing a heavy boulder. The first push requires effort, the second becomes easier, and eventually, momentum takes over.
Waiting for motivation keeps you stuck. Taking action creates motivation.
Stop Chasing Perfection
Perfection is one of the biggest motivation killers. If every goal has to be completed perfectly, your brain quickly associates growth with pressure.
Instead of asking: “Can I do this perfectly?”
Ask: “What’s the one step I can take today?”
Tiny consistent actions outperform occasional bursts of motivation every single time.
Reconnect With Your Why
When life becomes busy, we often forget why we started.
Ask yourself:
- Why does this goal matter?
- Who benefits if I succeed?
- What happens if I give up?
- What kind of person am I becoming?
Your purpose is often stronger than your motivation, reconnect with it regularly.
Build Habits Instead of Depending on Motivation
Motivation comes and goes, but habits stay.
One of the biggest shifts I help clients make through my life coach services is moving away from relying on emotions and towards creating daily systems.
Simple habits might include:
- Journalling for five minutes each evening.
- Walking for twenty minutes each day.
- Reading ten pages of a personal development book.
- Planning tomorrow before finishing work.
- Celebrating one small win every evening.
Small habits create remarkable long-term change.
Be Kind to Yourself
Many people believe being hard on themselves will create better results. The opposite is usually true!
Self-criticism creates stress, and stress reduces motivation.
On the other hand, compassion creates resilience! If today wasn’t your best day, tomorrow offers another opportunity to begin again.
Progress has never required perfection, it only requires persistence.
You Don’t Have to Do It Alone
One of the biggest reasons people stay stuck is because they try to carry everything themselves.
Working with a personal life coach provides accountability, perspective and support when motivation naturally dips.
Sometimes one conversation can unlock months or even years of feeling stuck.
You don’t need someone to tell you what to do, you need someone who helps you uncover what’s already within you.

Motivation isn’t something you find, it’s something you create.
